Re: Older ebooks to the 2016 format

I hope B-Savage was able to resolve his problems. I have now converted some 50 COW Express ebooks to the new COW Pro format. The largest was 3.5 gigs. The process works without a hitch for me. I'll provide some details for anyone who has the same memory constraints as I have. I have two ASUS laptops...

Re: Using COW Professional - Basic questions

Thanks John. Here's something I found on BackSolving on pg 3: "Numbers are the numeric assessments of the leaf nodes which are assigned by chess engines. That can be done manually by visiting a leaf node, allowing the engine to think, and then grabbing the engine analysis. It is more commonly d...

Re: Using COW Professional - Basic questions

Thanks John, I confirmed your answer to my third question. It's kind of neat in operation, though I don't know if I will use it. As to 2, I think you are basically right, but there seems to be a twist of sorts. Here is a test case example. I have a database with the following moves (PGN, Export line...

Re: Interface options (backburner)

Using COW Pro, I regularly reduce the size of the window. Saving screen space allows me to open two windows at once, side by side. I reduce the width until I can just see the candidate pop-up button (downward facing triangle). Doing so cuts off some of the header: Opening name, certainty, Move field...

Using COW Professional - Basic questions

I have several COW professional databases and am getting more by converting by COW express files. I have three basic questions about the Professional version 1. Opposite (right of) the candidate moves, I see a bar with three segments, white, gray, black. I assumed this corresponded to win loss resul...

Re: Compatibility topics

A quick note on case 3 on importing a 2009 book bought as an EBook at EverymanChess.com

I imported the CBV file into ChessBase reader. It seems to be a complete import. It seems that I can add moves and variations, BUT they are not saved!

Case 1, original BookUP side by side with COW. Success. I went to http://www.columbia.edu/~em36/macos9win.html and downloaded a Mac OS9 emulator for Windows. I now run my original BookUp files side-by-side with the modern COW. I can see my thoughts, comments, and original analysis from years past an...

Re: Indexing and searching PGN files prior to import

I used COW Professional to do two different databases searches. In each case, COW Pro came back with 1,000 games. In at least one case, I had reason to think that more games were available. Does COW Pro's search engine have a 1,000 game limit?

Re: Older ebooks to the 2016 format

I'm in the process of converting a large COW Express file (2018 games) to COW Pro. It takes a long time and my computer gets hot. I ran into some luck as my computer eventually goes to sleep and cools off. When I wake my computer, new positions are loaded until the next break. I'm glad the conversio...

Chess game statistics

This is not really a COW topic, but is COW related. I use COW extensively, but I find that it is complemented with a game database. Back in the BookUp days, I used Exachess. One feature it provided was game statistics from the current chess position. I would copy those statistics from Exachess and p...
