Moving ebooks to and from your mobile device and your computer
Why cloud storage?
The first reason is to make backups of your chess ebooks. If you later lose your phone or tablet, you can use your new device to connect to the cloud and restore any ebooks that you have uploaded.
For security reasons, nothing (outside of a mobile app) is allowed access to data stored by the app. Only the COW app itself is allowed to move copies of its own data into – and out of – the mobile device.
Similarly, the COW app can’t get access to your computer. There has to be a place for the mobile app to pass the files to your computer. That’s where the cloud comes in.
To share your ebooks with the Windows or Macintosh version you’ll need to use some type of cloud storage.
How to set up Dropbox to connect your COW app to your desktop computer (Windows or Macintosh)
How to set up Google Drive to connect your COW app to your desktop computer (Windows or Macintosh)
NOTE: If you are familiar with your cloud service, you might be tempted to move the files yourself. Don’t do that! Let your mobile COW app and your desktop COW app handle that for you. The cloud services make secure folders that only Chess Openings Wizard can access. Attempting to work around that by manually moving files does not go well.
The dropdown in the upper right allows you to choose which type of cloud storage you want to use. Dropbox and Google Drive are currently supported.
The Connect button is for starting the connection between the app and your cloud storage account. If it is the first time you’ve connected, this will guide you through logging in to your cloud storage account.
The Disconnect button is for breaking the connection with the cloud. This can be handy if for some reason the list of files in the cloud are not updating. You can disconnect and then connect to start fresh.
The Forget button is for removing the connection between the app and your cloud storage account. Use this if you change cloud storage accounts for some reason.
The Upload and Download buttons are for starting the process of copying an ebook. The Upload button will copy the highlighted file on your mobile device to the cloud. The Download button will copy the highlighted file in the cloud to your mobile device.
The Delete button allows you to delete the highlighted file from the cloud. (Deleting ebooks from the mobile device is done from the menu.)
Press the Done button when you are done using the cloud storage screen.
When a file is highlighted, the Size: and Created: fields will show the size of the file and the last time it was updated. This is handy if you must decide whether an ebook on your mobile device or in the cloud is larger (and therefore might have more analysis) or newer (and therefore might contain more recent edits).
