Re: Custom COW eBooks

I just ran across another source of games: https://www.pgnmentor.com/ We are are spoiled for choices of PGN chess files. I think all are designed to be stand-alone. They vary considerably in price and features. However I think all can benefit from a match-up with COW. The reason is that at some poin...

Custom COW eBooks

I have imported games, PGN files, into COW for years and am still discovering new resources and match-ups. Here are some that I have used. Importing current games. I used to do this weekly using The Week In Chess. I switched to Chess Assistant and update annually. Either way there would be one COW e...

Re: Compatibility topics

I'll try this again! So I got the image to look right! (See Post of Feb 20th, 2020). Looking at the COW image, only the first candidate, 9...Ne7, is valid. The other four are bogus; they each loses a piece! The PGN import is garbled for some reason. It is not just this file. Every opening book (PGN...

Re: Chess Database Needed or Not

I used to go to The Week in Chess and download a week's games at a time. These can then be imported into COW, It's free. I now use Chess Assistant. It's great once you learn the ins and outs of using it. There are a lot of features, some hidden. However in addition to buying CA, one has to update it...

Re: Tablet considerations

Thanks for the excellent post on your experience with your Samsung tablet. You mentioned: "The only thing I notice is about a second delay when I click the arrow to advance a move." Perhaps you can adjust the speed. I set my move speed to "high" in COW Pro for Windows (Edit, Prog...

Re: Purging orphaned positions?

Mike addressed this question in the "Five Positions a Day Challenge" Facebook post on Feb 13th. I think he also addressed it during one of the videos, but I'm not sure which one. Below is cut and paste response from Facebook post: ... The manual process is to open a new empty ebook and im...

Tablet considerations

I'm thinking of buying an android tablet. Things that I have learned at Bookup.com: I can get a free version of COW from the App store. I can use drop box to move existing COW files, on my Windows PC, to my tablet. I can connect to my COW Pro and have it analyze a position, sharing the results to my...

Re: Compatibility topics

Everyman Chess has reduced the price of two of their E-book bundles: Starting Out (3) which is 10 books for $45, and Starting out (4) which is 5 books for $25. At $5 or less a book, I could not refuse. They are older titles, but explanations, rules of thumb, and good games annotated well are timeles...

Re: Compatibility topics

"I have not had a fault-free import yet from Everyman Chess."

I have to correct that. My Great Predecessors by Kasparov seems to have read in just fine. I have had trouble with the opening books from Everyman Chess.
